For people who love to read, there’s no better joy than to share favorite books and discuss each one. Book clubs are ideal for this kind of sharing. When you can’t be with your bookworm friends in person, an online book club organized from your apartment in Flagstaff is a great alternative. Here’s how to organize one.
Choose an Online Platform
You’ll need to find an online platform that supports voice, chat and/or video. One of the most popular ones right now is Zoom, which is free for users who only need an hour. There are other platforms available, too.
Choose Your First Book
Next, you’ll need to choose the first book to discuss. Goodreads offers book club support, with a wide range of reading suggestions depending on which books you’ve enjoyed in the past. Most book-club hosts pick three books so the group members can decide which one they’d like to read and discuss.
Decide on a Schedule
Most book clubs meet up once a week or twice a month, but the schedule you choose will depend on everyone’s availability. Make a shared 30-day calendar in Google docs and ask everyone to block out the dates and times they are NOT available. This will enable you to make up a schedule where everyone is free to virtually attend.
Get RSVPs
Next, finalize the schedule with everyone and get their RSVPs. One easy and cute way to do this is through Evite. Consider sending out a “save the date” invitation. Don’t forget to name the book everyone is supposed to have read by the time the virtual club meets!
Make up a List of Questions
After everyone has had a chance to read the book (two weeks is typical), make up a list of questions to discuss. Some books have a list at the back. Don’t feel like you have to stick to the questions. These are just in case there’s a lull in the conversation.
An online book club is a great way to connect with friends when you can’t meet in person. If you’d like more information about our apartments in Flagstaff, please get in contact with us. They're the perfect peaceful place to read!
