Cat restingYou love your cat, and you're pretty sure it kind of likes you because of the purring and occasional lap visits. An indoor cat can be a great addition to your Flagstaff apartment, but keeping an indoor cat happy can take a bit of effort. Take a look at a few tips you can use to make sure your inside kitty is just as happy as what it would be outdoors.

Invest in a DIY Cat Tree

In the wild, cats are natural climbers. An indoor cat with a need to climb may get antsy and try to scale the curtains or your furniture, so it is always best if you provide them something that is safe to climb. A cat tree can be found at just about any pet store, but you can also create your own with a few supplies and a little imagination. The Spruce offers some cat-worthy DIY options that will work just fine.

Don't Forget to Play

Cats, like dogs, love to play. They like to stalk, hide, and even swat. It is not at all uncommon for cats in the wild to do things sheerly for entertainment. Therefore, playtime with your kitty is really important.

Put Out Some Cat Grass

Bring a bit of nature indoors for your cat to enjoy. Cat grass is a bland grass that cats actually like to lounge in and nibble. You can pick up seeds really cheap, plop them in a large planter, and give kitty a bit of indoor nature.

Add Variety to Food Options

Yes, it is best if your cat has a good stable diet of kibble. However, introducing the occasional treat or spoonful of canned wet food is always encouraged. Some cats are particular about what they munch, but most will appreciate some occasional variety.

Walk Your Kitty

Cat leashes and harnesses are a thing. Even if it takes your kitty a bit of getting used to, they will learn to enjoy outdoor time while on a leash. Cats can slip out of a collar and leash rather easily, however, so a harness does work best.

Dog with santa hatThe holidays are coming! At this time of year, there's often a lot of excitement. Special decorations go up, special foods are put on the table, and holiday activities begin. If you're a pet owner, this season can bring challenges. Keeping up with your cat or dog's health can be difficult. These three tips can help you through the holiday season.

Get Help With Walks

If you have a dog, it needs to go out for a walk at least once each day, even if you're busy with holiday events. To keep up with your dog's exercise needs, hire a professional to take your dog for walks at midday, or get help from other members of your household. Make a schedule that calls for each person in your home to take turns walking the dog.

Put Holiday Sweets and Decorations Out of Reach

Holiday sweets, especially chocolate, fudge, and anything that contains baker's chocolate can be toxic for pets. If your pet is large or clever enough to access foods on the counter of your kitchen, keep these baked goods in containers with secure lids. Educate anyone who comes to visit about the importance of not feeding your pet human foods. For a full list of human foods that could cause your pet to get sick, talk to your pet's veterinarian. Put holiday decorations out of reach as well so they aren't damaged, and to prevent hazards caused by knocking them over.

Avoid Toxic Holiday Plants

Some holiday plants, including holly, mistletoe, and poinsettias, are toxic for pets. If you like having these plants around the house, keep them out of your pet's reach, or use artificial plants instead. If someone gives you a plant as a gift, find out from your pet's veterinarian if that type of plant is also toxic.

If you love hiking with your dog, you've probably explored the many trails that wind through Flagstaff's forests. But did you know that Arizona's deserts also offer some amazing hiking opportunities? It's true. But before you head out with your pup, you need to take the following important precautions.

Timing Is Everything

As you are aware, temperatures in the desert can be brutal during the day, especially in the summer. So, make sure to time your hike for early in the morning or the late afternoon. Hiking during the middle of the day is not only dangerous, but it is also, in at least one city in Arizona (Phoenix), against the law to take your dog trail-hiking if the temperatures reach 100 degrees or more.

Don't Forget the H2O

According to REI, a large dog requires 0.5 to 1 ounce of water per pound per day, while canines under 20 pounds require approximately 1.5 ounces a day per pound. But, remember those figures do not take into account the increased need for water your dog will require while hiking in the desert.

Other General Requirements:

  • Make sure that your dog is wearing identification and is chipped. You may also want to have your dog wear a GPS tracker.
  • Make sure to let someone know where you and your pup will be heading.
  • The sand can get painfully hot, so head home if temperatures start to rise. You may want to bring dog booties, but they should only be used for emergencies. One of the ways dogs regulate their body temperature is through their paws, so booties could cause them to overheat.

Is your dog your furry best friend? Then, come check out our beautiful apartments in Flagstaff, which are pet-friendly and have access to a dog park. For our human residents, our community also boasts a swimming pool.
